So what is Kahukura?

Kahukura is a cultural learning programme that provides a framework for tamariki, whānau and schools to explore knowledge significant to iwi.  The design of Kahukura allows schools to easily integrate it with their curriculum.  The role of teachers is to support the inquiry process and information sharing. Tamariki complete ten tasks and an inquiry project about topics of significance to the iwi and rūnanga. So far three different Kahukura programmes have been developed for Ngāi Tahu but the model can be used for other iwi too.whanau with work

Sample task sheets, teacher resources, professional advice and all administration materials are provided online.  There is a student booklet for each programme that students use to track progress, with whānau and the school signing off each task.

Kahukura can be facilitated during class time at school, used as homework, or completed independently by tamariki with their own whānau (so the school doesn’t have to be involved). There are no age restrictions but we recommend from age seven up, including primary and secondary, parents and others interested in learning more about Ngāi Tahu.

We have been told by schools and whānau that Kahukura works for them.  The schools who have already participated have been able to rejuvenate relationships with whānau while whānau have been able to be included in the teaching and learning of their children in a meaningful way.

Did we mention that participation is FREE for rūnanga sponsored schools and whānau?

If you would like to find out more information then please contact us.  If you would like your school or whānau to particpate in Kahukura you can apply here.
