Icon Theory

Kahukura is based on the premise that collaboration between whānau and schools results in better outcomes for learners.

Kahukura encourages schools and teachers to work with whānau to inform teaching and learning. Bishop (2003) noted,

“Where students know, who they are, where they come from and how they know what they know forms the foundations of interaction patterns in the classroom, learning can occur effectively. In short, where culture counts.”


This is explained further:

“When teachers create culturally appropriate and responsive contexts for learning, Maori students are able to interact with teachers in ways that legitimise and validate who they are, and how they make sense of the world.” Bishop, Berryman, Tiakiwai and Richardson (2003)


Whānau can enrich the professional learning experiences for teachers and leaders as they seek to modify their teaching/leadership practices. Working together allows collaboration and results in better outcomes for students.


Kahukura provides a framework for learning and allows whānau to contribute to what the content looks like. They are able to act as supporters, informers, and validators of knowledge.
