Kahukura and Hokonui

The name Hokonui means “big snow”.

Hokonui Rūnanga is one of eighteen divisions of Ngāi Tahu, sometimes known as hapū, sub-tribes or papatipu rūnanga.   People from Hokonui Rūnanga have lineage to one of the Hokonui kaumatua identified on the 1848 Ngāi Tahu census.  A person who is from Hokonui Rūnanga is also from the Ngāi Tahu iwi (tribe).

Hokonui Rūnanga are the mana whenua in the Gore area and share interests with other Ngāi Tahu rūnanga located in the Otago region, especially South Otago.

Some information about Hokonui rūnanga is available online here.

Ka Hikitia: Managing for Success – The Māori Education Strategy 2008 - 1012 has the goal of increasing iwi authority in education.  It advocates for positive, learning focused relationships with whānau and the delivery of programmes that promote Māori language, culture and identity.  Kahukura is a programme that has been developed specifically to enable schools to work towards this in a partnership. It aims to be non-threatening while also working towards significant change in how iwi contribute to school curricula.
