‘Ka whanawhana ai te tīwhanawhana o kahukura i te rangi.”
(Let the arch of the rainbow glisten)
Kahukura has four main objectives:
- To
provide tamariki with the opportunity to research and learn about Ngāi
Tahu cultural knowledge, history and te reo in a way that encourages
whānau involvement, is supported by schools and celebrated by Ngāi Tahu.
- To motivate tamariki to learn about Ngāi Tahu knowledge, history, culture and te reo.
- To
provide a solution for parents and whānau wanting their children to
have the opportunity to receive supportive learning that is specific to
Ngāi Tahu and Māori.
- To help schools to support whānau aspirations for tamariki/mokopuna.
Kahukura ki Hokonui is a rūnanga focused version of Kahukura that centres on Hokonui knowledge, tikanga and kaupapa.

The four
objectives will be achieved by developing, implementing and reviewing a
learning programme that provides a tailored positive learning
experience for Ngāi Tahu students focusing directly on age appropriate
cultural knowledge and Te Reo Māori.
Kahukura supports all students living in the Ngāi Tahu region to gain valuable
knowledge and information about local iwi history and kaupapa.
